The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game where players bet on the chances that they have the best five-card hand. The game is incredibly addictive and fun, but it takes a lot of practice to develop quick instincts and be able to read tells. You can get started by reading books and watching online videos, or by getting lessons from a professional player.

Once everyone has their two hole cards the dealer deals three cards face up on the table that all players can use (called the flop). Each player then gets the opportunity to bet again. After the flop betting is over the dealer places one more card face up on the board that all players can use, called the turn.

After the turn, another round of betting begins with each player having to make a decision whether to call or raise. You can also fold if you don’t think you have a good enough hand to win.

Generally speaking, you should only play hands that have the highest odds of winning. That means suited high cards or a straight. Don’t play unsuited low cards, even if they have a kicker.
